While some long-established brands are renowned for their festive commercials, this year they’ve been pipped to the post by an outsider.

Aldi's contribution has been crowned the number one Christmas advert, beating big names like Marks & Spencer and Christmas ad giant John Lewis.

Kevin the Carrot returned to become the face of the German supermarket's festive promotion and was the most discussed entry as well as coming second in the sentimentality stakes. 

Data firm 4C drew up the lists by calculating the number of times each brand was discussed on social media in the first five minutes after it’s advert aired.

These figures were then compared with the amount of mentions the advert received in the run-up to it’s release to discover it’s “lift” rate. 

They were also able to calculate the ad’s “sentimentality” by analysing the words used in association with the advert in terms of positive and negative language.

Hot on Aldi's heels was Boots which generated a social lift of 141 per cent and maintained a positive sentiment of 81.9 per cent of all social engagements.

The John Lewis Christmas Advert suffered a surprising fall in popularity as 2017's offering did not appear to impress as much as previous years.

The ad “Moz the Monster”, which showed a young boy befriending the creature under his bed, came only tenth in “social lift” list.

Although, the retailer did fare slightly better in terms of sentimentality, narrowly beating Sainsbury’s to sixth place by 0.1 per cent. 

Marks and Spencer’s Paddington ad triumphed in the “sentimentality” list as 87.5 per cent of tweets were considered positive and it was awarded first place.
