Google Maps update should make it tougher to miss your stop

GOOGLE is tipped to roll-out a new feature to its Google Maps software that will make it much harder to miss your next bus or train stop.

’ latest feature could prove to be hugely useful for those who use the app on public transport.

The new functionality will send a notification when the train, tube or bus is nearing your designated stop, telling you to disembark.

If that sounds at all familiar, it’s likely because this feature has been available on a number of competitors for a while.

Notably, CityMapper has included the functionality since 2015.

Google Maps will now include the alerts when you launch a new journey that includes public transport.

To plot a route in Maps, search for your final destination using the search bar at the top of the app, then hit the Start button towards the bottom of the screen.

As soon as the journey is launched, the mobile app will start delivering live updates on your journey.

Google Maps will also ping your smartphone with a notification to remind you to get off the tube, train or bus when your stop is approaching.

According to TechCrunch, lock screen notifications for this feature are also planned.

This should save you the hassle of unlocking the device each time you want to check your progress, or remind yourself of the directions.

Instead, you’ll only need to glance at the lock screen.

Google Maps is a hugely-popular service amongst smartphone owners.

But the in past, the mobile app has been more tailored to those behind the wheel, compared to walkers, bikers or those on public transport.

These new updates help to swing the balance.

Unfortunately, Google hasn’t confirmed exactly when users can expect the new update to go live.

According to TechCrunch, Google may already be testing it outside of its trusted tester community.

That’s a good sign the new feature could roll-out worldwide soon.
