A far deeper game than its B-movie stylings would imply at first glance, Wolfenstein II also delights with its fast-paced, creative first-person warfare. Its tongue-in-cheek social commentary is heavy-handed, but there are few other games where mowing down the bad guys feels so cathartic or warranted.

The New Colossus also pulls off the rare trick of being a sequel that more than lives up to the standard set by its predecessor, making this a real treat for returning players. The story is fantastic, combining a compelling ensemble cast with a genuinely emotional yarn. While tonally-inconsistent at times, you always feel passionate about wiping out the Nazi menace ruling over the globe.

Yakuza Kiwami is a magnificent remake of the PS2 original, providing Kazuma Kiryu’s debut adventure with new visuals, cutscenes and gameplay mechanics. SEGA has evidently poured a lot of love into this adventure, and in doing so has crafted an excellent action-adventure.

Set in the fictional red light district of Kamurocho, Yakuza Kiwami tells a story of revenge, betrayal and friendship fitting of the best cinematic crime thrillers. It’s also super violent, with Kiryu capable of some truly intense combos. Mini-games such as arcades, karaoke and bowling also give you plenty of things to do away from the main story.

Injustice 2 is one of the finest fighting games of 2017. By making incredible use of the DC license with a huge cast of playable heroes and villains, NetherRealm Studios has crafted one of its best creations in a long, long time. The combat system is rewarding for both veterans and newcomers, boasting an incredible amount of customization through a dastardly addictive loot system.

The comprehensive solo campaign makes things even better, pumping out a more convincing story than any films in the fumbling DC Cinematic Universe. Comic book fans will find so much to love here, especially those who are looking to trounce their friends as Superman, Batman, Harley Quinn and more.

Ninja Theory’s latest work might just be its finest yet. The studio behind Heavenly Sword and Enslaved: Odyssey to the West has crafted a harrowingly beautiful journey with amazing visuals,  great performances and ingenious design.

It’s short-lived but perfectly paced with a blend of action and puzzles that grows in richness and complexity as the game goes on. Senua’s story is a tragic, heartfelt one that is just begging to be experienced.

After four years of waiting, PS4 players finally have a Tekken title to sink their teeth into. Updating the classic formula with new mechanics, fighters and a cinematic solo campaign, Namco’s iconic fighting series has never been better. Looking absolutely gorgeous on PS4, Tekken 7 feels fittingly engineered for newcomers and veteran players alike.

While it doesn’t quite reach the fantastic heights of Injustice 2, Tekken 7 remains an excellent fighter that builds upon the classic series in exciting new ways. Whether you’re playing through the fiedishly addictive Treasure Battle mode or taking on friends online, there is plenty to love here.

This generous gameplay loop is made even better by some wonderful visuals and sharp, witty writing the series is renown for. Persona 5 is nothing but essential in your 2017 gaming calendar.

NieR: Automata is the sequel to 2010’s belovedly bizarre cult classic that builds upon the original’s brilliantly varied combat with a suitably deep narrative that will keep you guessing well beyond its initial ending. Playing as 2B, an android carrying out the bidding of humanity’s last renmants against otherworldly invaders in an oddly skimpy dress, you’ll spend your time cutting down countless robots while exploring a dense, post-apocalyptic world.

While it may not rank among Platinum Games’ finest, the imaginative mixture of high-octane combat and the wonderfully compelling story makes NieR: Automata an essential purchase for fans of obscure Japanese games. From the looks of it, Yoko Taro has struck gold once again with this mythical masterpiece.

Horizon Zero Dawn is quite simply the most gorgeous console game ever made. Whether you’re gaming on PS4 or PS4 Pro, it’s a beautiful title that needs to be seen to be believed. It is also the finest example of HDR we’ve yet to see in games.

But Guerilla Games has also delivered so much more: Horizon is a compelling story told with an incredibly satisfying gameplay loop. As Aloy, you will take to this glorious open world, bow and arrows in hand, and hunt everything in site. It’s an immensely enjoyable game and a must-buy for PS4 players.

Team Ninja combines the complexity and challenge of the Souls series with the fluid and exciting combat of Ninja Gaiden to bring its best game in a decade in the form of Nioh.

With an intricate combat system that allows players to exploit myriad weapons and stances, you’ll get to take on loads of fiendish monsters as you progress through the world, one demon at a time.

The boss battles may prove overly tricky and the story may not offer the emergent storytelling of From Software’s offerings, but this is still a brilliant game and a must-buy for fans of a challenge.

At the core of Yakuza 0 lies an emotional tale that will grab you by the heart and never let go, taking you through a series of brutal fights and unpredictable story beats. This is balanced out by the sheer variety of side-activities on offer, many of which are utterly mental in their execution.

The Witcher 3 has become the ultimate RPG – the one by which all others should be judged. For one, this is the largest, and most convincing open world we’ve ever seen. But also, you’re looking at a game with a storyline, quests and game systems that makes that world an incredibly compelling place to exist in.

This is the GTA 5 of sword and sorcery, so be prepared to sink a lot of hours into this game.

It only took ten years, several delays and a major name change, but Final Fantasy 15 is finally upon us. The Japanese giant has ridden the hype train for over a decade, and the end result is an ambitious, flawed yet ultimately enjoyable experience.

You play as Noctis, a young prince driving across the country with his friends in preparation for an arranged marriage between two kingdoms. Unfortunately, things quickly go wrong and you’re stuck in a bitter struggle, many of which involved would rather see you dead. The story is a bit of a mess, but it’s held up by a gorgeous open world utterly packed with things to do.

The world of Eos is absolutely huge, begging to be explored as you discover new towns, outposts and dungeons littered with unique quests and enemies. The gameplay often falls short of modern design expectations, yet remains a fun departure for the traditionally turn-based franchise.

Electronic Arts has taken the explosive shooter franchise back to the filthy trenches of The Great War with Battlefield 1. In doing so, it has produced what is arguably the best game in the series for decades, boasting a truly emotional solo campaign and bombastic, long-lasting multiplayer.

The single-player campaign is a harrowing retelling of the infamous conflict through the eyes of brave young soldiers fighting in a war they have no place in. Unfortunately, it’s over far too soon, a true testament of its quality that it left us begging for more.

Battlefield 1’s multiplayer is equally as fantastic, providing you and millions of other players with vast, explosive battlefields to march, drive and fly across. The blockbuster action of previous titles is here to stay, and it’s more pronounced than ever this time around.

This standalone Uncharted adventure stars Chloe Frazer and Nadine Ross as they travel across the world in search on an ancient treasure. Despite taking place outside the main series, The Lost Legacy is equally as beautiful and hectic as its siblings.

Stuart Andrews adored it, awarding Lost Legacy 10/10 in his review: “To my mind, this isn’t merely one of the best games of the summer, but one of the season’s best blockbusters in any media. If Naughty Dog wants to leave the series here, it’s hard to grumble, but let’s hope it doesn’t. Right now, more Uncharted seems like anything but a bad idea.”
