AirBNB gets regulated in Paris

By John Michonski 0 Comments NEWS, Regional News

It seems that anywhere AirBNB exists, it will run into trouble eventually. The lodging service recently came under scrutiny in Paris, France, where new regulations have been introduced to curb AirBNB and other similar services. Specifically, if the company and its competitors continue to list apartments or rooms that aren't registered with Paris' government, the city will sue.

Paris has taken these actions to curb potential market inflation after AirBNB scooped up a large swath of the rental market for their temporary housing services. With these new laws in place, AirBNB cannot rent a property out for longer than 120 days per year. Over 1,000 listings have been flagged for not complying with the regulations already, and more will come after they are brought to light. If these listings aren't removed from portal sites or other listing services, AirBNB will be fined by the city.

An AirBNB spokesperson has commented on the matter, saying "So far we informed all Parisian hosts on host registration through series of emailings and publics meetups where city hall officials were invited, and changed our platform to allow local hosts mention their registration number on their listings." This means AirBNB cannot actively impede the listings without shutting down service for certain listers. Their sway must be put into effect soon, however, as the market is biting back at their strategies.
