Two dozen candidates are seeking election to a half-dozen non-judicial Harris County positions next year.

As the filing deadline closed Monday evening, the following had officially declared their candidacies, according to the Texas Secretary of State website and local party officials. Primary elections are slated for March:

  • County Judge: Democratic challenger Lina Hidalgo will take on 10-year Republican incumbent Harris County Judge Ed Emmett. Another Democratic candidate, Mike Nichols, bowed out Monday despite only filing for election Friday.
  • Harris County Commissioner, Precinct 2: Five candidates -- former sheriff Adrian Garcia, Daniel Box, Ken Melancon, Roger Garcia and Pasadena City Councilman Sammy Casados -- will vie for the Democratic nomination. The winner will challenge Republican incumbent Jack Morman for the Precinct 2 Commissioner seat.
  • Harris County Commissioner, Precinct 4: Two Democrats, Jeffrey Stauber and Penny Shaw, will face off in the March primary before seeking to unseat incumbent Republican Jack Cagle.
  • County Treasurer: Three Democrats have filed to run -- Cosme Garcia, Dylan Osborne and Nile Bailey Copeland. Whoever wins the primary will face Republican incumbent Orlando Sanchez.
  • County Clerk: Diane Trautman, Gayle Young Mitchell and Nat West filed to run as Democrats. On the Republican side, incumbent Stan Stanart is being challenged by Noemi Valdez.
  • District Clerk: Kevin Howard, Marilyn Burgess, Michael Jordan and Roslyn Shorter will vie for the Democratic nomination and the chance to unseat Republican incumbent Chris Daniel.
