Odisha Human Rights Commission seeks report on plights of traffic cops

BHUBANESWAR: The Odisha Human Rights Commission (OHRC) on Tuesday sought a report from the State Government on the plights of traffic personnel deployed in the districts.
Acting on a petition filed by rights activist Biswapriya Kanungo, the rights panel has asked Additional Chief Secretary of Home Department and DG of Police to submit a report within six weeks.
The petitioner alleged that the traffic personnel in the State are working in deplorable conditions and deprived of basic amenities which amounts to violation of human rights.
While there is no toilet facility near the traffic posts across the State, he claimed the traffic cops in district headquarters have not been provided adequate sun glasses, gloves, umbrellas, rain coats, winter jackets though they continue to exercise their duties in all weather conditions.
"The traffic personnel are also not provided with clean drinking water facilities.
There are about 57 traffic posts in the Capital City and over 230 personnel are deployed there on a regular basis," the petitioner added.
