Man Utd news: Antonio Valencia says famous moment shows Man City may lose title

MANCHESTER UNITED star Antonio Valencia thinks the Red Devils’ collapse in 2012 could happen to Manchester City.

Manchester City are on course to win the Premier League title after beating Manchester United 2-1 at Old Trafford on Sunday.

David Silva and Marcus Rashford both traded blows before Nicolas Otamendi won it for City with an acrobatic effort.

Many expect Pep Guardiola’s side to hold on and win the prize for the first time since 2014, when Manuel Pellegrini was in charge.

Yet Valencia thinks that City may slip up given what happened in 2012.

Manchester United were nine points clear with eight games of the season to go.

However, the return of Carlos Tevez gave City hope and they ultimately went on to win the prize with the Red Devils losing their bottle.

And Valencia is hoping for a repeat, albeit the other way around.

"We know that 11 points is a big gap but I can think back to when Sir Alex Ferguson was manager and the gap was something like nine points and we ended up losing the title,” he told Sky Sports.

"So we know that it's the Premier League, we know that everyone's capable of beating everyone else and it's just a case of keep fighting."

BBC pundit Alan Shearer, however, cannot see Guardiola’s side choking.

Man Utd news: Man City celebrate winning the title back in 2012

“There are still five months of the season to go, but the title race is over - I do not see anyone stopping Manchester City from winning the Premier League now,” he said.

“It was not just the result the leaders got at Old Trafford on Sunday that was significant, it was the way they got it too. They were totally dominant, and fully deserved their 2-1 win.

“City are 11 points clear at the top of the table and at the moment they are streets ahead of Manchester United - and everyone else. I don't see anyone catching them from here.

“They have dropped only two points so far, so I just don't see them losing four or five games between now and the end of the season, which is what it would take for them to be caught.

“United are their closest rivals and had looked like being the team most likely to challenge them, but I was very disappointed with their gameplan and their performance on Sunday.”
