Farmers’ woes: BJP submits memo to Guv

| | BHUBANESWAR | in Bhubaneswar

A State BJP delegation on Tuesday submitted a memorandum to Governor SC Jamir at the Raj Bhavan alleging that despite repeatedly raising the issues of farmers’ problems like drought, pest attack, unseasonal rains and delay in estimate of rain damages, the State Government has remained inactive.

The delegation sought the Governor’s intervention in the issue. The memorandum stated the State Government had directed to complete the estimate of damages by November 25. But it has not been done. Besides, they stated that the Revenue and Agriculture department officials are not making field visits and preparing reports.

The BJP expressed doubts if compensation would be paid to the farmers and the sharecroppers on a fair basis. They mentioned that they have doubts over proper identification and distribution of compensation to the genuine beneficiaries referring to the scam in the ration card distribution in the Cuttack Municipal Corporation, in which eligible beneficiaries were deprived of cards but the CMC Mayor and other ruling party activists were provided cards.

The Chief Minister had announced to provide bonus of Rs 100 to the farmers but it is yet to be done, they lamented. The memorandum further stated that there have been a number of farmer suicides but the State Government is not accepting them.

BJP State president Basant Panda, MLA Bibhuti Bhusan Harichandan, Rabi Naryan Nayak and many other senior leaders were part of the delegation.
