NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court on Monday agreed to examine whether politicians could be barred from contesting from more than one seat in an election and sought the attorney general's assistance to decide the issue.

A bench of Chief Justice Dipak Misra and Justices AM Khanwilkar and D Y Chandrachud asked petitioner Ashwini Kumar Upadhyay to serve a copy of his petition to the AG's office so that he could take a stand on the issue on the next date of hearing. Advocate Amit Sharma, appearing for the Election Commission, said the poll body was in favour of disallowing politicians from contesting from multiple seats. as it resulted in wastage of public money.

He said that the commission had already requested the Centre to amend the law to bar people from contesting elections from multiple constituencies.
