CHANDIGARH: Attacking Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) leaders and workers of blocking highways for their political gains and thus causing severe inconvenience to public, Punjab CM Amarinder Singh on Monday warned of serious consequences to those holding public to ransom.

The CM urged all the political parties to find alternative way of protest rather than indulging in blocking highways. He added any form of protest causing inconvenience to citizens cannot be termed 'democratic' and blocking the national highway was a crime under the law. Lashing out at the Akalis for blocking highway last week, the chief minister said lakhs of people had to suffer because of their dharnas, which were nothing but sheer theatrics.

Terming such such acts a sign of petty minds, the chief minister said the SAD leaders do not see beyond short-term personal gains.

Amarinder said that the national highways are of strategic military importance, besides being lifelines for the civilians, and nothing can justify blocking these vital links just for petty politics. He added that military convoys could not move and essential supplies could not reach the soldiers standing guard at the borders in time due to this ill-thought decision taken by the Akalis.

Amarinder also rejected Akalis' claims of mobilizing masses as completely false and said that Akalis were indulging in street politics out of sheer desperation just hoping that it would help them recover some of the lost political ground. "They were going the AAP way with their dramas, without realizing that they would meet same fate as Kejriwal's party," CM added.
