Legal notice served to Premier Bank chairman

A Supreme Court (SC) lawyer today sent a legal notice to HBM Iqbal, chairman of Premier Bank, asking to refund Tk 8.09 crore to Viqarunnisa Noon School and College in Dhaka in seven days.

Eunus Ali Akond served the legal notice saying that he will file a criminal case and will move writ and contempt of court petitions against HBM Iqbal if he fails to refund the money.

In the legal notice, the lawyer said Iqbal has transferred Tk 8.09 crore of the educational institution to his bank (Premier Bank) between October 10, 1998 and December 30, 1998 while he (Iqbal) was chairman of the institution.

Viqarunnisa Noon School and College authorities moved a civil suit before the Joint District Judge’s Court in Dhaka for taking the money back from Iqbal. The court on September 3, 2008 directed Iqbal to refund the money, Eunus said.

Iqbal has been running business keeping it deposited in his bank for about 20 years, the SC lawyer said.

Iqbal has committed forgery and breached the belief by misappropriating the money, which is a punishable offence under section 406/420/408 of the Penal Code, he said.

By doing so Iqbal has violated the banking law and constitution, Eunus added.
