GHAZIABAD: BJP leader Asha Sharma was sworn in as the new mayor of Ghaziabad, along with 100 councilors of the municipal corporation, in a ceremony held in the city on Tuesday. Meerut divisional commissioner Dr Prabhat Kumar administered the oath of office to Sharma (58), who had been elected mayor by garnering nearly 50 percent of the total votes polled in the municipal elections held on November 26.
Sharma is the sixth mayor of Ghaziabad. After being sworn in, Sharma said her primary focus would be on developing Ghaziabad as a clean and pollution-free city. "Supply of clean and potable drinking water to the Trans-Hindon part of the city would be amongst my priorities. During campaigning, I have witnessed first-hand how water supply shortage continues to be a major problem in Trans-Hindon Areas. My focus would be to work in Ghaziabad as a servant of the people," said Sharma.
After Sharma was elected mayor on December 1 following counting of votes, she had been campaigning extensively in Gujarat along with Prime Minister Narendra Modi for the state's assembly elections. In a tweet last week, Modi had praised Sharma for the win, which she secured by defeating her nearest rival by a huge margin of over 1.63 lakh votes.
"Asha Sharma Ji's landslide victory in the Ghaziabad Mayor polls is a matter of immense joy for the Party. Was happy to know her vision towards improving infrastructure in Ghaziabad and ensure a better quality of life for its citizens," Modi had tweeted.
Shortly after being sworn in on Tuesday, Sharma briefly outlined her vision for the development of Ghaziabad. "We are planning for proper sewage disposal and waste management in Ghaziabad. We are planning to generate compost and renewable energy from municipal solid waste. In our endeavor, we will need suggestions and support of the general public and the numerous social and voluntary organizations of Ghaziabad," said Sharma.
The meeting was attended by Ghaziabad MP General VK Singh apart from other local BJP leaders. Meerut divisional commissioner Prabhat Kumar assured all help from the administration to the newly elected mayor and councilors. "The time is opportune for the all-round development of Ghaziabad because now we have able administrators in the prime minister at the center and the chief minister at the state. Staff at the municipal corporation need to be energized and motivated. The municipal corporation should be a corruption-free organization," said Kumar.
Chairpersons and councilors of the remaining eight urban local bodies in the district were also sworn in in different events held on Tuesday. Apart from the post of Ghaziabad mayor, the BJP has won four of the remaining eight chairpersons' seats in the district.
