LUDHIANA: Days after the TOI reported how chief minister Captain Amarinder Singh's promise to give power to industry at Rs 5 per unit had fizzled out, the industry associations of Ludhiana and other cities have come on one platform to start a hunger strike.
On Monday, a conference of close to 50 associations was organised at a city hotel in which their office-bearers and leading businessmen of the city took part. It was decided in the meeting that if the government did not issue notification for reduction of power tariff by December 20, then they would start chain hunger strike.
Inderjit Singh Navyug, president of United Cycle Parts and Manufacturers' Association (UCPMA), said, "The main agenda of the meeting was to decide the next course of action against the government for backtracking on its promise to reduce power tariff to Rs 5 per unit. All associations in one voice condemned the retrospective increase in power tariff. All associations felt that the time had come to show unity. The industry will wait for the decision of the government till December 20, after which chain hunger strike will be started at Vishivkarma Chowk."
Badish Jindal, president of Federation of Punjab Small Industries' Association (FOPSIA), said, "Entire industry of Punjab is together as injustice is being done to us. We have decided that daily five organizations will sit on hunger strike. The dharna will continue till the government reduced the rate to Rs 5."
Vinod Thappar, chairman of knitwear club, said, "We have also decided that no association will welcome any MLA, minister or MP of the government and that the industry will not participate in any of the government programmes till our demands are met. Retrospective charges imposed on us should also be rolled back."
Industrialists present in the meeting included Upkar Singh Ahuja (president of Chamber of Industrial and Commercial Undertakings), Kulwant Singh (president of Chamber of Industrial and Trading Entrepreneurs), KK Garg (president of All India Induction Furnace Association of North India), Avtar Singh Bhogal, Pardeep Wadhawan, Sukhdial Singh, Manjit Singh Matharoo , Kulwant Singh, Jaghbir Singh Sokhi and Pradeeep Wadhawan.
