The festive lights in the town of Citinova Marche in Italy have been wrapped around tropical palm trees in the town centre.

But at night when the lights came on they revealed a very naughty image.

American blogger Amanda Cerny shared a picture of the phallic-looking objects on her Instagram account, and since then the lights' fame has grown and grown.

One Twitter user joked: "I don't think that's what's meant by a happy ending to the year".

Another tweeted: "You see this as a reason not to light up palm trees, whereas I'm thinking this is exactly why one should always have lights on palm trees".

Other Twitter users shared similar photos of Christmas light fails.

One picture showed lights in the town of Heraklion, Greece, which looked like a very cheeky candle and two holly berries.

Another showed a smaller, stubbier palm tree lit up with festive lights in unintended hilarity.
