'Stop insulting us' Anna Soubry demands Government asks Remainers to HELP secure Brexit

ANNA Soubry has called on the Government to reach out to Brexit bashers to make a success of the nation’s EU evacuation.

Ms Soubry, who spoke from the back benches of Parliament, as Brexit secretary David Davis listened, went on to implore the Government to “please reach out to remainers, former remainers, the 48 per cent” to “try to build a consensus”.

It comes as scores of MPs weigh down the EU Withdrawal Bill with a slew of amendments – prompting some Brexiteers including Iain Duncan Smith to accuse parliamentarians of “looking for ways to derail the bill”.

Ms Soubry, who has regularly railed against the UK’s decision to leave, said while the nation’s decision might “break the hearts” of Europhile MPs, they had been forced to accept the results of the referendum “even though it goes against everything they have ever believed in”.

She said: “Not only have they accepted the result, they have then gone and voted to trigger Article 50.

Ms Soubry has repeatedly railed against the UK’s decision to leave

“And one of the things that saddens me, as much as it saddens me that we’re leaving – probably more than that we’re going to leave the European Union, is the inability of those people who voted and supported the Leave campaign to understand and actually respect those of us who were Remainers.

“Those of us who have voted to trigger Article 50, and now genuinely say ‘we are here to help deliver this result to the best deal that we can get as a country’ – putting our country before our own views and before our party political allegiances.

“Now it may be that some leavers, particularly some people formally in Government, can’t accept that because unfortunately they judge people like me by their own standards.

“So for people to say that in the tabling of an amendment you are somehow trying to thwart or stop Brexit is frankly gravely offensive.

“And that level of insult, because it is an insult, has got to stop.”

Ms Soubry was one of 19 Tory Remainers who wrote to Theresa May last week, condemning Brexiteers’ calls for the PM to walk away from the EU negotiations with no deal as “highly irresponsible”.

Select committee chairs and former Cabinet ministers are among the MPs who signed a letter to the Prime Minister on Wednesday sparking fears of a Tory civil war.

The rift in the party over Brexit appeared to widen yesterday as several heavyweight Brexiteers piled on the pressure at Prime Minister’s Questions, reminding Mrs May of their “red lines” for negotiations.

And the PM came under fire as 19 Remainers said they were “disappointed” in MPs’ attempts to “impose their own conditions” on Brexit.

The letter read: “It is highly irresponsible to seek to dictate terms which could lead to the UK walking away from these negotiations.”

Former education secretary Nicky Morgan, work and pensions secretary Stephen Crabb, and attorney general Dominic Grieve signed the letter, which was coordinated by Ms Morgan.
