Former champions fought back in a spirited fashion to chalk out a 3-2 victory over Indian Navy in an all-clash of the 52nd Bombay Gold Cup Hockey Tournament at the MHAL-Mahindra Stadium today.

In the second match of the day qualifiers Union of India, also from Mumbai, got the better of Indian Air Force, Delhi, 2-1 in Pool D.


Twice in arrears, in splendid fashion fought back to score a 3-2 win against a spirited Navy in a Pool-C league match.

The sailors took the lead on two occasions through Jugraj Singh's penalty corner conversion off their third award in the 7th minute and Rana Pratap's field goal in the 44th minute.

But, the determined railway outfit replied back strongly with Amit Rohidass, fresh from his stint with the Indian team in the Hockey World League in Bhubaneshwar, scoring from a short corner in the 40th minute. It was followed by Rajin Kandulna's second equaliser in the 64th minute.

Western then got the match-winner off a fine effort from Neelkant Sharma at the fag-end of the match.

In the game between Union and Air Force, Bacon Kheratkar scored from a field attempt to put the team in front in the 10th minute.

The side got the equaliser through full back Love Singh who scored from a penalty corner in the 24th minute.

However, Union scored the match-winner when Harjit Singh converted a penalty stroke in the 60th minute.
