Two unidentified persons attacked a woman and took away 200 sovereigns from a house in Tirunelveli Town on Tuesday evening.

Police said the duo, who barged into the house of fruit trader S. Thangadurai’s house in Perumal North Car Street, tied his wife T. Gandhimathi (35) to a chair. When she put up resistance and tried to snatch the sickle they were carrying, the robbers gagged her with a cloth and attacked her with the weapon, inflicting multiple cut injuries on her hands.

The robbers took away 200 sovereigns of gold ornaments kept in a chest, and also the closed-circuit television cameras fitted in the house before making good their escape.

The neighbours came to know of the crime only when Ms. Gandhimathi managed to cut the rope with great difficulty and opened the door. She has been admitted to hospital and is reportedly out of danger.

The police suspect that the youth, who committed the crime, might have known of the locality and the affluence of Mr. Thangadurai.

Tirunelveli Town police have registered a case.
