Belagavi: Agasage, a village with a population of 6,000 and 8km from Belagavi city, is set to become digital with internet connectivity through Wi-Fi hotspots.

IST Society, established by the government of Karnataka under department of information technology and bio-technology (IT-BT), is implementing internet connectivity in rural areas through Wi-Fi hotspots using National Optical Fibre Network (NOFN) backhaul of BSNL at Agasage gram panchayat (GP).

The Wi-Fi connectivity is for accessing digital services for day-to-day activities of the villagers at the GP and its villages. Land records, tax payments, electricity/water/telephone bill payments, railway/bus ticket reservation, birth, death certificates, cast and income certificates and other services of state and central government can now be availed by villagers.

The Wi-Fi devises are being installed. The state government entered into an agreement for deployment of Wi-Fi installation in about 2,150 GPs in the state.

Harshvardhan, panchayat development officer, Agasage gram panchayat, said that Wi-Fi network towers have been installed at four locations in the villages. Each tower covers 500 meters. A user will get 100 MB data every day for usage. People can utilize the free internet data to get information on government programmes, online facilities and online transactions in everyday life, he said.

Belagavi zilla panchayat CEO R Ramchandran said, "The process for installing Wi-Fi services in all GPs in the district has begun and this is the first village where work has begun," he said.
