It’s always best to learn from experts. Despite awareness programmes by the State government on waste management and organic farming through the Haritha Keralam Mission, many people are still in the dark on how to execute such ideas. So, why not learn it from people whose 10-year-old success stories inspired the Haritha Keralam Mission? Niravu Vengeri, which has come a long way beyond its tag as a residents’ association, through its pioneering work in the field of waste management and organic farming, is all set to impart knowledge to interested persons during a six-day exhibition from December 21 to 25. The 101 residences that are part of Niravu will become 101 exhibition stalls during this period, featuring 101 successful models of sustainable development.
The exhibition is titled ‘Midori’, which means ‘green’ in Japanese language.
The name was selected by the younger generation of Niravu residents, who have already made their mark in the IT sector through IT@Niravu, in honour of the Japanese who, with their will power and determination, had rebuilt their nation from the ashes of the Second World War.
The stalls will feature models related to energy and water conservation besides waste management and organic farming. Here, you will find people who cultivate vegetables without complaining about lack of space. And you will learn how the dung from a single cow can become the fertiliser for cultivation in 101 households. Mushroom cultivation, mini solar plant and LED bulb manufacturing will be some of the models to be displayed at the stalls, while one has been turned literally into a museum of endangered seeds. Visitors will get to learn the working of a biogas plant as well as wine production.
Niravu is in a festive mood, preparing for the week-long festivities that also include several seminars and awareness classes on sustainable development.
The residents, in association with the National Service Scheme volunteers of Providence Women’s College and artists in Kozhikode, have painted thematic pictures all along the compound walls in the association. Students play an active role in ‘Midori’ as part of their annual NSS camp.
