PATNA: The unusual warmth in otherwise chilly December is likely to last only a couple of days more with the weatherman forecasting a new wintry pattern in the region under the influence of a western disturbance that has led to snowfall in J&K since Monday.
A western disturbance normally brings winter rains in northern plains in India and is usually preceded by cloudy conditions and followed by sharp drop in temperature amid windy conditions.
According to Patna Meteorological Centre scientist Anand Shankar, the minimum temperature is expected to plunge up to 10 degrees C by Friday.
"The clouds which led to snowfall in J&K and rain in Delhi on Monday, reached eastern UP by Tuesday afternoon. Though chances of rainfall in Bihar are unlikely, we expect shallow clouds in northern and north-western parts of the state on Tuesday night and Wednesday," Shankar told TOI on Tuesday, adding the temperature in any case would start falling in the state from Wednesday.
The wind speed, which is currently calm at less than 1kmph at most places in the state, is also expected to increase to 10-12kmph by Friday. "The north-westerly winds coming from snow-laden J&K and neighbouring states will add to the chill in the northern plains," Shankar said.
The 'warm winter' in Bihar is also attributed to the fact that most western disturbances have passed from the upper latitudes, giving Bihar a miss.
Patna's minimum temperature average for December in the last 30 years (1981-2010) is 10.5 degrees C. However, the minimum temperature in the current month has hovered in the range of 11-13 degrees C also under the influence of a low- pressure area in the Bay of Bengal. Its impact, however, is expected to reduce by Wednesday.
