Transcript: Merriam-Webster Selects 'Feminism' as Word of the Year

Merriam-Webster’s word of the year for 2017 is “feminism.” The dictionary saying the word was a “top lookup” during the historic Women’s March in January.

The word also spiked again in February when President Trump’s close adviser Kellyanne Conway said she finds it difficult to call herself a feminist in a “classic sense” because quote “it seems to be very anti-male, and it certainly is very pro-abortion, and I’m neither anti-male or pro-abortions.” Merriam-Webster’s definition of feminism is “the theory of the political, economic, and social equality of the sexes.” The word is still a top trender as the Me Too movement sweeps through the nation, as women come forward with incidents of high-profile figures taking part in sexual misconduct.

Meanwhile, Dictionary.com’s word of the year is “complicit.” Even Saturday Night Live aired a skit advertising a mock perfume of Ivanka Trump’s called “complicit,” which means, “choosing to be involved in an illegal or questionable act.”
