Brits face more travel HELL as UK gripped by -15C ARCTIC FREEZE on coldest night of year

BRITS will face more nightmare road conditions on the roads today amid snowstorm warnings and freezing temperatures across the country.

“We expect Tuesday to extremely busy as temperatures plummet overnight”

Mercury plummeted to a low of -15C in some places – making it one of the coldest nights of the year.

The coldest temperatures were recorded in central England and Wales.

Forecasters warned the freezing conditions could pile further misery on motorists with treacherous ice and snow expected to cripple major UK roads.

The Met Office acted quickly to issue a severe weather warning for snow and ice in Scotland and along England's east coast.

Ice is expected to cover London, the South East, much of the Midlands, Northern Ireland and Wales.

AA President Edmund King said: “We expect Tuesday to extremely busy as temperatures plummet overnight, causing even more hazardous conditions on already wet and slippery roads.

“All of our patrols are working hard throughout the country to help those broken down or stuck in ice and snow and we have plans in place to ensure our call operators can travel to and from work safely to answer emergency breakdown calls.”

But weather boffins warned while temperatures could rise, many places will continue to feel the icy cold.

Aiden McGivern said: “There will be some sunshine but everywhere will be feeling particularly cold, some places below freezing throughout the day.

“The rain will be heavy in places and as it moves its way east there will be some hill snow, but it brings with it milder temperature, so by the end of Tuesday night and the start of Wednesday temperatures will be recovering.”

Meanwhile, dozens of schools in the South West, West Midlands and Wales will keep their gates closed for a second day following the bitterly cold conditions.

The AA said it had its busiest day of the year on Monday with around 25,000 calls from motorists - and was preparing for a deluge of calls on Tuesday.
