Gayle, 38, sent the records flying as he smashed a stunning 146 not out off 69 balls for Rangpur Riders in the Bangladesh Premier League final today.

The West Indian heavy hitter opened the batting and struck four fours and 18 sixes in the incredible knock.

During the process, Gayle scored the most number of sixes in a T20, completed 11,000 runs in T20s, ensured he is the first person to score 20 centuries in T20s and became the first player to hit 100 sixes in the BPL.

His heroics came just days after he booked Rangpur Riders a spot in the final by striking 126 not out off 51 balls in another man-of-the-match display.

While his displays have earned deserve praise online, some fans believe they know why Gayle has clicked into life - and it surrounds the Indian Premier League.

Under the new retention policy, teams can retain up to five players in the IPL auction.

Gayle has previously played for Royal Challengers Bangalore but it’s unclear whether they want to keep him.

Asked whether he would be retained, Gayle admitted earlier this year: “That will be up to them, to be honest. The auction will be open to any particular team but at the same time, RCB have been fantastic. To be associated with such a franchise, it has been brilliant.

"You don't know what the rules will actually be when that time comes around as well. Hopefully, fingers crossed, you will see Gayle storm in the IPL.”

Gayle has struggled for form in the biggest cricket competition on the planet - averaging just 22 in his last 19 IPL matches.

And supporters think he has now bucked up his ideas in Bangladesh in order to guarantee himself a big payday in India.

Another said: “The destroyer Chris Gayle is back to form ahead of the IPL auction.”

A fellow supporter tweeted: “Making RCB to think about retaining him and if not it will be interesting seeing Gayle in Auction.”

While another added: “Chris Gayle is back in form...And ready for @IPL Auction ...#chrisgayle

“Chris Gayle making sure @RCBTweets don't release him,” wrote a fellow user.
