UNWTO appoints first lady of Iceland as their Special Ambassador

Eliza ReidThe First Lady of Iceland, Eliza Reid has been nominated as a Special Ambassador for Tourism and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) for UNWTO (World Tourism Organization).

 

This appointment has taken place at the second UNWTO/ UNESCO World Conference on Tourism and Culture.

 

This is an official event of the International Year of Sustainable Tourism for Development 2017 hosted in Muscat, Sultanate of Oman. UNWTO had set up the Special Ambassadors for Tourism and the SDGs program as e legacy of the International Year of Sustainable Tourism for Development 2017.

 

The program attempts to advocate for the contribution of sustainable tourism to the 17 SDGs in the national, local and international agendas.

 

Reid had underlined the importance of sustainable tourism as a means to create peace and social cohesion. Tourism is actually one of the crucial flagbearers of peace, security and friendship as well as understanding among the people of the globe due to its direct contacts it engenders between people belonging to a variety of cultures and lifestyles.

 

Reid also feels that sustainable tourism has immense power and a significant role to play in terms of minimizing inequality and increase tolerance.

 

She added that she feels honoured to have been offered a role as a Special Ambassador for Tourism and the Sustainable Development Goals. The Secretary General of UNWTO Taleb Rifai mentioned that by becoming a Special Ambassador on Tourism and SDGs being the First Lady personifying Iceland’s wholehearted dedication to the idea of sustainable tourism development she would be able to support UNWTO’s efforts to make tourism more responsible and healthier.
