A Mississauga truck driver pleaded guilty to careless driving and was fined $1,200 Tuesday for causing a fatal crash on the Herb Gray Parkway in February.
Dinesh Kumar, 31, was transporting a load of plastic food container bins to Texas on Feb. 7 when he slammed into standstill traffic at the Todd Lane underpass. Nicole Vetor’s Oldsmobile Bravada was the last car in the line of traffic. Vetor, 19, died when her vehicle became sandwiched between Kumar’s truck and another transport in front of her. It was shortly before 4 p.m. and Vetor was on her way to work at Delta Wire and Manufacturing.
Kumar said he did not notice the four signs warning drivers to be prepared to stop. According to the data recorder on his truck, he was going the posted speed limit of 100 kilometres per hour before slamming on the brakes and trying to veer away from Vetor’s vehicle. He avoided hitting her with the cab but his trailer crashed into the back of her car.
“I think the Ministry of Transportation is helping these truck drivers kill our families,” said Vetor’s sister, Jamie, in a victim impact statement she prepared for court.
