Heading into the 2017-18 season, the Oklahoma City Thunder were forecast to challenge the Golden State Warriors in the Western Conference, built around reigning MVP Russell Westbrook and perennial All-Star pick-ups Carmelo Anthony and Paul George.

One-third of the season in, the Thunder are an underachieving 12-14 — one spot out of the playoffs if the season ended today. Who is to blame? Local media point the finger at coach Billy Donovan, who is the man in charge of orchestrating championship chemistry. Anthony has said he's in the worst shooting slump of his career. Westbrook doesn't see many excuses, telling reporters, "it's up to us, honestly. We just gotta figure it out and play the same way every night."

Playing at home on Monday, with a chance to jump back to .500, Oklahoma City collapsed defensively and fell 116-103 to the Charlotte Hornets. Afterward, George assessed his team's early struggles and frustration.

"For the talent that we have, obviously this is not where we want to be," George told reporters after the loss. "But we're going to remain optimistic, though, about the future and what we can do. Once we can find a way to really do it night in and night out, it's no panic mode, but we have to start playing better. It's getting to a point where we can't allow ourselves to be at this point.

"We can say we're going to figure it out, we can say all that. But at some point it's got to stop."

Donovan has viewed the struggles as more of a process that will eventually get better, adding Monday night: "Everybody's giving up something of themselves for the benefit of the team, and I think at some point that will pay dividends for us."
