What is idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis?

IPF is an incurable condition that causes scars on the lungs.

Fibrosis makes the organ stiffen, making it difficult for them to inflate.

For this reason, breathing can become difficult.

Research into the illness is still in its infancy, so there is no definite proof of what causes idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis.

But scientists have found some patterns into the condition, as they believe it tends to affect those aged between 70-75 years of age.

also states that it is “rare in people under 50”.

What are the symptoms of idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis?

The warning signs of IPF include:

- shortness of breath

- a dry or hacking cough that recurs for a long period of time

- fatigue

- loss of appetite

- swollen fingertips, known as clubbed fingers

The British Lung Foundation urges those who experience these symptoms for a prolonged period to visit their local GP.

How is IPF diagnosed?

Doctors have a number of different ways they can establish the cause of your symptoms.

Many carry out breathing tests to see how well the lungs are functioning.

Then, they may recommend X-rays, CT scans or blood tests.

In some cases, they choose to carry out a lung biopsy via a bronchoscopy.

How is idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis treated?

Even though there is no cure for IPF, certain treatment options are available for sufferers.

This can help to reduce the severity of symptoms, although it can’t prevent them completely.

Pulmonary rehabilitation is commonly prescribed.

This treatment helps patients to cope with feeling breathless.

Those who battle shortness of breath on a regular basis may also be given oxygen therapy.

They can then keep oxygen concentrators at home or in portable cylinders.

As well as this, doctors may recommend certain lifestyle changes, including giving up smoking.
