The following student-athletes have been selected to The Washington Post’s 2017 All-Met team for field hockey:
PLAYER OF THE YEAR
Mackenzie Karl, MF, Sr., Westfield
Captain capped an illustrious high school career with 40 goals and 19 assists, leading the Bulldogs to an undefeated season and the Virginia Class 6 state championship. Recorded at least one point in every game to earn Virginia player of the year honors. Played four varsity seasons under her mother, Coach Starr Karl, who rushed to the hospital in 1999 after a field hockey game in which she coached to give birth to Mackenzie. Will play for Louisville next season.
FIRST TEAM
Anna Bertrand, MF, Jr., Clarksburg
Multidimensional offensive weapon with exceptional speed and stick skills scored 18 goals and recorded 18 assists for Maryland 4A West region champions. Verbally committed to Delaware.
Darcy Clement, F, Jr., South River
Boston College verbal commit skilled at beating players with first touch recorded 13 goals and four assists for Maryland 4A state champs.
Margaret Ellington, MF/D, Sr., Good Counsel
Washington Catholic Athletic Conference player of the year provided leadership from the back for league runners-up. Will play for U-Mass.-Amherst next season.
Rachel Fleig, F, Jr., Chesapeake
Captain led Cougars to second straight Maryland 3A state title, scoring 15 goals and recording 17 assists. Verbally committed to Appalachian State.
Delaney Golian, D, Sr., Westfield
Virginia Class 6 first-team all-state defender organized Westfield defense that surrendered seven goals all season and recorded 18 shutouts. Will play for Cornell next season.
Taylor Henriksen, GK, Sr., St. Stephen’s/St.Agnes
Virginia commit recorded 142 saves, 12 shutouts for the Independent School League champions.
Sydney Keating, D, Sr. Fairfax
Skilled dribbler with unparalleled ability to start attack from the back line finished with 10 goals and 13 assists. Will play at Mary Washington.
Margot Lawn, F, Jr., Spalding
Member of the United States U17 national team scored 28 goals, seven of which were game-winners, and recorded seven assists.
Clara Morrison, F, Jr., St. John’s
Syracuse verbal commit scored 26 goals and added 13 assists to power the Cadets to their third straight WCAC title.
Paige Reese, MF, Sr., Glenelg
Towson commit known for special vision and relentless hustle was heart of Maryland 2A state champions.
Eleanor Winants, D, Sr., Episcopal
Wake Forest commit finished high school career with program-record 90 goals.
COACH OF THE YEAR
Lynn Powell, Patuxent
After taking over a three-year-old varsity program in 2000, Powell built it up in an area hardly known as a field hockey hotbed. Founded Riptide field hockey club to promote sport for local girls, helping facilitate a turnaround capped with this season’s 2-0 win in the Maryland 1A state title game over Francis Scott Key in the team’s second championship game appearance in three seasons. The Panthers finished the season 17-1 with 13 shutout wins and a 101-goal margin of victory.
