Mumbai: The Gamdevi police on Sunday arrested four men for allegedly molesting two women at a restaurant in Girgaum late on Saturday night.
The complainant, a 38-year-old woman, was at the restaurant with her family and friends to celebrate her birthday.
“The complainant, after paying the bill, was preparing to leave when she felt a hand on her back. While she did not pay heed to it, thinking she might have been touched by mistake, she felt it a second time after which she turned around and saw a man behind her. He was accompanied by three men sitting at a nearby table,” said an officer.
The complainant did not make an issue of the incident. A few minutes later, her friend, who was with her, also felt the man’s hand on her back. The friend’s husband noticed him touching her and assaulted the molester.
The matter turned into a brawl with the accused’s three friends getting involved. The brawl spilled out onto the pavement, and a small crowd gathered. The commotion attracted the attention of a patrolling unit of the Gamdevi police.
“Both the parties were brought to the police station, and after recording statements of all the people, we registered a case of outraging a woman’s modesty and criminal intimidation under the Indian Penal Code,” said the officer.
Senior police inspector Netaji Bhopale said that all the four accused were arrested early on Sunday.
