PATNA: The state agriculture department on Tuesday entrusted the Asian Disaster Preparedness Centre (ADPC) to develop a 'Climate Inclusive Agriculture Risk Atlas' for Bihar.

The ADPC is currently developing an atlas for Supaul district as a pilot project. Based on the outcome, an atlas for the entire state will be made by the ADPC with the help of the Centre for Environment, Energy & Climate Change (CEECC) at Asian Development Research Institute (ADRI).

The Supaul study will focus mainly on the risk and vulnerability of the agriculture and allied sectors on account of floods, drought or other water-related hazards leading to potential crop and livelihood as well as infrastructure losses.

Addressing a consultation workshop on the development of 'Risk Index for Agriculture & Allied Sectors in Bihar' at Bihar Agriculture Management & Extension Training Institute (BAMETI) on Tuesday, ADRI director Prabhat P Ghosh said initiatives like these needed consensus to deliver and mitigate climate change.

BAMETI's P K Mishra gave an overview of the importance of the Disaster Risk Reduction Road Map and the vulnerability of the agriculture sector.

ADRI's founder-secretary Shaibal Gupta said the agriculture risk atlas would be first of its kind in the country. Joint director (agriculture) Arvind Mishra also spoke at the workshop which was jointly organised jointly by the agriculture department, CEECC, ADRI and ADPC.
