Pune: The Pune Rural police have solved nine cases with the arrest of two members of a 'lift' robbery gang on Monday.
The arrested have been identified as Ganesh alias 'Whisky' Ganya Babanraop Surase (20) and Avinash alias Bablya Prakash Shinde (25) of Chikhali. They along with three other suspects had allegedly robbed a 35-year-old man of valuables worth Rs 35,000 after offering him a lift at Urse village about a month ago.
The victim, a private company employee, had lodged a complaint with the Talegaon Dabhade police on October 6.
In the complaint, he stated that unidentified occupants of a car offered him a lift while he was walking towards Talegaon Dabhade from his residence at Urse village, located off old Pune-Mumbai highway.
The suspects, who were armed with sharp weapons, issued him threats of dire consequences and beat him up before robbing him of gold ornaments and cash, totally worth Rs 35,500, the complainant stated.
The local crime branch officials were hunting for the suspects involved in this robbery since the complaint was lodged. It was only on Monday that police managed to track down the suspects. "We have also identified the other suspects and will arrest them soon," police said.
Police have also recovered a cellphone from the suspects. "The cases that have been solved were registered with the Dehu Road, Chakan, and Talegaon Dabhade police stations. Besides, four other cases registered with the Nigdi and Bhosari police stations have been solved," police said.
The three other suspects, who are on the run, have been involved in the robbery cases registered with the Chinchwad, Shikrapur, and Dehu Road police stations.
"Further investigation is on. More cases are expected to be solved after the arrest of the absconding suspects," police added.
