OHRC disposes of 3689 cases till Dec

BHUBANESWAR: Odisha Human Rights Commission (OHRC) has disposed of 3689 cases till December 1. The Commission had recommended different departments of the State Government to pay compensation of over `45 lakh to victims of 18 cases during 2017-18. OHRC officials asserted that its intervention has resulted in a noticeable improvement in many areas related to protection of human rights and fundamental freedom of individuals and groups.

“Till December 6, OHRC has received around 5534 complaints. OHRC has been focusing on protecting the vulnerable individuals, including children, women in distress, people in custody or under treatment, elderly persons, differently-abled, among others,” OHRC official said. With emphasis on importance of human rights, OHRC celebrated Human Rights Day on Sunday. On the occasion, OHRC’s acting chairperson Justice BK Mishra visited the Mental Health Institute of SCB Medical College and Hospital, Cuttack and met the patients.The souvenir of the Commission, ‘The Peoples’ Beacon’, was also released by dignitaries, including Justice BK Mishra.

Man knocks OHRC door

A man on Monday lodged a complaint with OHRC alleging that his daughter was murdered on September 1 and thrown on railway tracks near a temple in Rayagada district.
Gouri Sunamudi of Bissamcuttack in Rayagada approached the commission and stated that his daughter Lipsarani, who was a first year BSc student, was murdered and subsequently Rayagada GRP officers had registered a case. But, the GRP are yet to nab all the culprits.
“I have urged the Commission to direct the GRP for conducting a thorough investigation into the case. I have also requested OHRC to direct CBI to look into the matter considering the sensitivity of the case,” he said.
