Valdes Dombrovskis, EU Commissioner for the Euro and Social Dialogue, told France 24 that all member states of the European Union have to join the Eurozone eventually. 

He said: “That’s the ultimate goal. If you look at the Treaty, all member states excluding Denmark are actually obliged to join the Euro. 

“There is no strict deadline associate do this, so members still can choose their pace, but ultimately all member states should be joining the Eurozone.”

The President of the European Commission, Jean-Claude Juncker, has expressed many times his intention to help non-eurozone nations to join up. 

Last September in Strasbourg he said he wants “small reforms” of the European Union and closer cooperation. 

He said: "It is time to bring Romania and Bulgaria into the Schengen area. And incidentally, Croatia too deserves full membership. If we want the euro to unite our continent rather than dividing it.

Mr Juncker said: "All but two member states are duty bound to join the euro area. These member states need the support of a euro accession instrument."

On Monday Silvio Berlusconi, leader of the Italian political party Forza Italia told BBC News he welcomes the idea of leaving the eurozone and re-introduce the old Italian currency, the Lira.

Three of Italy’s political parties are backing the introduction of “Fiscal Credit Certificates” as an alternative to the euro.

The plan already benefits from the approval of the European Central Bank. 

The certificates will give workers and businesses tax breaks to boost productivity and income.

Although not legal tender, everybody can use them to pay taxes, buy government services or exchange them for goods or euros.
