In his first two starts, Jimmy Garoppolo has pulled off what a 49ers quarterback hadn’t managed in 13 years.
Garoppolo has thrown for 627 yards in wins over the Bears and Texans, the most in back-to-back games in the same season since Tim Ratty (716 yards) in October 2004. Rattay threw for 299 yards in a 24-14 loss to the Rams and added 417 in a 31-28 win over the Cardinals.
If his first two starts are a harbinger of yards to come, Garoppolo figures to break an extended drought in 2018: A 49ers quarterback hasn’t thrown for more than 3,400 yards in a season since Jeff Garcia in 2001, which is easily the longest streak in the NFL.
Here are the longest streaks entering the 2017 season, with each team’s leading passer in ’17:
49ers: 15 seasons (C.J. Beathard, 1,430)
Browns: 9 (DeShone Kizer, 2,252)
Bills: 4 (Tyrod Taylor, 2,090)
Texans: 4 (Tom Savage, 1,412)
Rams: 4 (Jared Goff, 3,383)
Bears: 1 (Mitch Trubisky, 1,508)
Dolphins: 1 (Jay Cutler, 2,100)
Jets: 1 (Josh McCown, 2,926)
** 24 teams had a 3,400-yard passer in 2016.
