New Delhi: Back in the 70s and 80s, when India weren't really a force to reckon with in Test cricket, there were a few players who could guard the team from a defeat. One such man was Little Master Sunil Gavaskar. He was the one who would hold one end up, and prevent the loss of wickets.

One of his innings against England at Bengaluru in 1981, just did that. The champion opener stood at the crease for 708 minutes, and scored 172 runs, that were instrumental in India's reply to England's 400. India did manage to get a lead, but then Gavaskar's marathon innings had virtually sucked up all the time from the match, to get a result. Interestingly, India batted only once in the match and scored 428 runs, and the whole innings lasted 716 innings.

As far as the match is concerned, it was drab draw. In the second innings, England could only register 174/3. In the match, Ravi Shastri took four wickets in the first innings, and Gavaskar was awarded man-of-the-match award for his innings.
