New York — The New York Police Department says it is responding to a report of an explosion near Times Square.
A pipe bomb strapped to a man went off in the New York City subway near Times Square on Monday, injuring the suspect and three others at the height of the morning rush hour, law enforcement officials said.
None of the
injuries were life-threatening.
The man and the other person were being treated for non-life-threatening injuries.
A law enforcement official says what is believed to be an explosive device has been set off on Manhattan subway platform.
Early media reports said the blast came from a pipe bomb.
Police say the explosion happened in an underground passageway under 42nd Street between 7th and 8th Avenues. The 7:30 blast filled the passageway, crowded with throngs of Monday morning commuters, with smoke.
The explosion triggered a massive emergency response by police and fire both above and below ground, tangling subway and bus service at the nearby Port Authority bus terminal.
It has led to delays along some of the subway lines that pass beneath the bus terminal.
Everything around the Port Authority area was shut down — a surreal scene of still at what would ordinarily be a bustling rush hour.
Some passengers have been evacuated as a precaution.
President Donald Trump was briefed on the explosion, White House spokesperson Sarah Huckabee Sanders wrote on Twitter.
