Gujarat result will set tone for winter session

NEW DELHI: The start of the winter session of Parliament is likely to be tumultuous as it will follow what has been a bitter electoral battle in Gujarat, a state crucial to BJP and Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the opposition parties are looking at issues to corner the government.

The results of the Himachal Pradesh and Gujarat assembly polls due on December 18 will set the tone thereafter with the delayed session extending into the new year. A win for BJP in both states will give the government an upper hand in pressing ahead with its legislative agenda, claiming a vindication for the PM. A setback, particularly in Gujarat, will shift the momentum towards the opposition and give Rahul Gandhi, set to take over as Congress president, a big boost.

No joint meeting of the 17-odd opposition parties has been scheduled before December 15, as all parties are waiting for the Gujarat results, opposition sources said.

Congress, Trinamool, the Left parties, DMK, RJD, SP, BSP and National Conference are among the opposition group which got together against the BJP government.
