The stench from foreign aid gets stronger - EXPRESS COMMENT

ANOTHER day, another foreign aid scandal story, each one worse than the last.

PresidentGETTY

The president of Mozambique has just splashed out £7million on a new private jet

This time round it involves Mozambique, a country which has been implicated in a £1.5billion secret-loan scandal and on which we have lavished £1billion over the past 10 years.

This doesn’t seem to have done its people much good given that two-thirds of them earn less than £1 a day – but its political class is doing very well indeed. The president of Mozambique has just splashed out £7million on a new private jet.

This must stop. For a start there are plenty of projects that need funding at home, not least our Armed Forces which have been dangerously deprived of cash in recent years. But more than that, this is making us a laughing stock.

It is right and good to give aid to countries that need it but to fund nations where the majority of the population live in poverty and the political class live high on the hog is downright immoral. We are paying for corruption, not a better way of life.

And yet still the insanity continues: money is tight at home, we have to fund our divorce from the EU and yet still some of the 0.7 per cent of our national income must be thrown away. This would be farcical were it not so serious. Stop the foreign aid madness now.

Labour’s betrayal on EU

IT  has long been obvious that the Labour Party is not fully committed to Brexit and now, thanks to Sir Keir Starmer, we know the real truth.

Under a Labour government there would be “easy movement” of European migrants, continued membership of the single market and acceptance of EU regulations. In other words, exactly what we have now.

Jeremy Corbyn’s Labour Party veers between dangerous hard-Left socialism and supine obedience to what he sees as our European masters. Who in their right mind could possibly want him in charge?

Labour’s economic illiteracy, combined with the EU’s ability to exploit weak governments for its own ends, would bankrupt the country.

It would be crazy to allow him anywhere near Number 10.

Joshua Sutcliffe claimed ‘ideology damages children’

TELL us: in what parallel universe would a teacher be suspended for congratulating a group of children with the words, “Well done girls”?

The one we appear to be living in, given the case of Joshua Sutcliffe, whose female pupils include one child who identifies as a boy.

A couple of decades from now people are going to look back and ask how the current generation could have treated children as subjects in an increasingly bizarre social experiment.

Pity the poor mites having to live through this now.
