In what has come has a shocking news for the college administration of the prestigious  Indian Institute of Technology-Kanpur (IIT-K), an internal inquiry has reflected that some of the students at the campus are resorting to a host of drugs.

The inquiry was organised after garnering specific inputs, and as per sources, the IIT-K administration came to know about over two dozen students who were involved in consuming drugs as well as prohibited medicines.

The drugs consumed by the students  include Surti (tobacco), smack, Charas (Cannabis), Ganja (Hemp), among others. The drugs are easily  available at the roadside paan shops as well as tea shops near the gates of the Institute. The sources also add that many private security guards as well as lower grade employees are also involved in the supply of drugs.

In order to curb the alarming situation, the II-K administration has pasted posters in the hostels to aware the students. The administration of the college has also organised a meeting with the DM as well as the SSP of Kanpur city to figure out a solution

"However, there is a locality called Nankari. The approaching road to it passes through our campus and it is always open. It is possible that peddlers are using this route and we are preparing to close this route and arrange for another passage for the residents. We do not want outsiders to access hostels and therefore have decided to provide a separate passage to the locals of Nankari and Barasirhoi villages to reach their destinations instead of passing through the main entrance of the institute,'' said IT-K director Manindra Agarwal.

"We are also planning to hold counselling sessions for the students to make them aware about the negative effects of such things on their health and their future," added Agarwal. The police has also spread some inputs to the Local Intelligence Unit (LIU). "A team of the LIU has been given the task to investigate the menace and we hope that they will come up with some positive results,'' said DM of Kanpur Surendra Singh.
