A man was detained following the blast in the passageway below ground at the Port Authority bus terminal, but have not said what the device was.
The arrested man, in his 20s, suffered non life-threatening injuries in the blast and is the only person to have been hurt.
Unconfirmed reports on ABC news, citing a New York Police Department source, said the explosion may have been caused by a pipe bomb.
A source told the New York Times the man was a would-be suicide attacker with wires attached to him, carrying a pipe bomb and battery pack.
It is thought his device may have malfunctioned and was not supposed to detonate when it did.
