Over 250 people took part in an awareness rally on the Right to Information Act organised by Gareeb Guide, a voluntary organisation here on Sunday.
Justice D.V. Rao of the Supreme Court flagged off the walk from the Indira Gandhi Municipal Corporation Stadium.
Speaking on the occasion, he stressed the need to increase awareness about the RTI Act in rural areas and among women. “This is termed as people’s Act and everyone should know about it,” he said.
He observed that the power of information was yet to trickle down to people in the State. “The main reason is the lack of awareness. Most people who seek information under RTI are from urban areas and a majority of them are men. In some instances people did not know what to ask and how to approach,” he said.
The walk passed through the Sub-collector’s office, Police Control Room, Canal Road, Prakasam Barrage and culminated at Undavalli. Krishna District Sports Director A Sekhar, All India OBC Railway Employees Federation president S. Ramachandra Rao, Gareeb Guide founder G. Bhargavi and RTI activists from 13 districts took part in the rally.
