Implementation of Goods and Service Tax and demonetisation had not affected the tourism industry, said Anurag Gupta, Director of India International Travel Exhibition.

Talking to The Hindu on the last day of a three-day exhibition here on Sunday, he said that the number of local tour operators in Madurai had doubled since last year, indicating that the number of people travelling for recreation was on the increase.

Of the 45 stalls at the exhibition, some offered educational tours, thus creating a niche market. Mr. Gupta said there were good discounts for walk-in visitors. Cusgtom-made and package tours were popular among the visitors, he said.

With the introduction of four flights flying to three international destinations from Madurai airport, there would be inbound traffic from those places. Madurai-Rameswaram- Kanniyakumari triangle was popular among North Indian tourists. With the arrival of international and north Indian tourists, more dollars and dimes will pour in,” he said.
