The 24-year-old goalkeeper is spending the season with the Championship club, who hope to snap him up on a permanent deal. 

He has impressed between the sticks, conceding just 18 goals in 20 league games. 

Johnstone’s current deal at Old Trafford expires at the end of the campaign but an option for a further season is set to be taken up. 

And Taylor has hinted that Johnstone’s deal has already been extended.

"I'd like to see him here permanently — any player playing as well as that you would like to keep," Taylor said. 

"But clubs like United don't extend your deal for no good reason.

"Sam can be as good as he wants — he's still a young goalkeeper.

"He should kick on from here and the sky's the limit for Sam.

"But the most important thing is he's playing football at a decent level — he's not sitting on the bench in the Premier League."

Villa boss Steve Bruce has previously admitted the club will go all out to complete a full-time deal for Johnstone. 

“We will do everything in our power to get him here permanently,” he said.

“He is going to find it difficult at United to break through because of what they have got so we are hopeful.”

Villa’s most famous fan, Prince William, has also been on at the club to land Johnstone.

“William is a big Villa fan and knew a lot,” Bruce said. 

“He was pleading with me to get Sam Johnstone tied up and make his deal permanent.

“We're pretty fortunate to have him as one of our big supporters.”
