A driver was taken to the hospital after crashing into multiple vehicles Monday morning on Pellissippi Parkway in West Knox County, according to a post on the Knox County Sheriff's Office Facebook page.
According to the initial investigation, a Lexus ES300 was traveling westbound on Pellissippi Parkway at Oak Ridge Highway around 11:45 a.m. when it struck a Toyota Camry in the rear, the Sheriff's Office said. No one in the Camry was seriously injured.
The driver of the Lexus was seen slumped over the steering wheel after the crash, then woke up and resumed driving westbound on Pellissippi Parkway, performed a U-turn, and began traveling eastbound on Pellissippi Parkway, the Sheriff's Office said.
The driver was seen driving erratically on the median and shoulder, struck two more vehicles, and continued driving eastbound. The Lexus rear-ended a black Audi at Lovell Road, went into the median, and caught fire. Motorists pulled the driver from the burning Lexus.
The driver was transported to Parkwest Hospital and then transferred to UT Medical Center.
Both southbound lanes and one northbound lane of Pellissippi Parkway were blocked for about an hour after the crash.
The Sheriff's Office is investigating and said more details will be released as they develop.
