'We won't be doing that' David Davis mocks Clegg's EU dream amid fresh bid to block Brexit

THE BREXIT SECRETARY tore into arch-Remainer Nick Clegg after another attempt from the former Liberal Democrat leader to block Britain's decision to leave the EU.

Anti-Brexit campaigner Nick Clegg has made another attempt to thwart the  process as he claimed the bloc would alter its beliefs over freedom of movement to allow Britain to remain in the EU.

Speaking on LBC, David Davis criticised Mr Clegg after his latest bid to scupper Brexit, saying the Government would take no notice.

Host Nick Ferrari began by mentioning Nick Clegg saying the former deputy Prime Minister was “close” to the EU when the Tory frontbencher stepped in.

Brexit news: David Davis mocked Nick Clegg after another push to block Brexit

“Too close sometimes,” Mr Davis quipped.

The presenter then highlighted Mr Clegg’s latest attempt to disrupt the Brexit process.

Ferrari said: “He has suggested that EU leaders want to offer Mrs May a deal to control immigration and therefore to halt Brexit, your response to Mr Clegg’s initiative?”

The Brexit Secretary said Government were focused on bringing the end of freedom of movement.

Well, we won’t be doing that

David Davis

He said: “Well, we won’t be doing that. The whole point, about bringing back control, one of the points was to control immigration.

“Not to stop it, not to say ‘you are not going to have anybody else anymore’. Not to put up the drawbridge.

“But actually make it a manageable level so things like housing and jobs and so on are properly balanced.

“That’s what we intend to do, and we may talk to the EU about what sort of immigration policy we are going to have, but free movement is coming to an end.”

Former Liberal Democrat leader, Mr Clegg, said that he believed the EU would alter its freedom of movement policy to keep Britain inside the Brussels club.

He said: “I've had several conversations in the past few months, with one prime minister and one deputy head of government in the EU, who were making efforts to go much further than the package of measures David negotiated.

“If the cost of keeping the UK in the tent was a new EU-wide approach to freedom of movement, they would bite that bullet.”
