'OUTRAGEOUS' Royal Mail will NOT print Brexit stamp despite printing one for 'joining EU'

THE Royal Mail has been slammed for its “absolutely outrageous” refusal to print a stamp commemorating Brexit despite it printing one for the UK joining the Common Market in 1973, it has been revealed.

Senior Conservative MPs attacked the Royal Mail for its decision not to print stamps to commemorate the UK’s independence from the EU in 15 months time.

The postal service has produced stamps to commemorate David Bowie, racehorses like Red Rum and a stamp was even produced in 1973 to mark the UK joining the European Economic Community - which later became the .

One Cabinet Minister asked for a rethink while senior Conservative MPs said it was “absolutely outrageous”.

Former Exiting the EU Minister and Conservative MP for Clwyd West, David Jones, said he will write to Business Secretary Greg Clark, who has oversight of the national postal service, to complain.

He said: "The Royal Mail has an absolute obligation to recognise a new chapter in the history of this country.

"It was a sufficiently important issue to attract the votes of 17.2million people - and as a matter of simple respect, the Royal Mail should be ensuring the occasion is properly marked.

"It is outrageous. This is a new and important chapter in the history of this country - and they have got a positive duty to mark it.

“If they can mark our accession to it then they should mark the country's liberation."

Leading supporter and Conservative MP for Wellingborough, Peter Bone, said the Royal Mail is “part of the establishment” which is showing “bias against Brexit”.

One Cabinet Minister said: “This feels premature and is surely worth further consideration. Important moments in our nations' history have been noted by the Royal Mail.

"Why should our departure from the be any exception?"

Ian Liddell-Grainger, Tory member of the Business, Enterprise and Industrial Strategy committee, which has oversight of the Royal Mail, said he will make sure Royal managers are quizzed about the decision when they appear in front of the committee next year.

He said: “I think it is unfortunate. The Royal Mail should print stamps. It is historic – whether they like it or not. The British people voted very clearly to leave the European Union in just over two years’ time.

“Therefore the Royal Mail should mark that. It would be very strange if Royal Mail that does do very good first day covers does not do this. It is of historical importance to the United Kingdom.”

UKIP said: “The Royal Mail celebrates everything from Star Wars to the Beano but can't be bothered to record the date of our departure from the .”

But, the Royal Mail’s decision has been welcomed by Remain campaigners who claim it is “a day of mourning, not celebration”.

Chief executive of pro- campaign group Best for Britain, Eloise Todd, said: “The Royal Mail is not creating stamps because day will be a day of mourning, not a celebration for millions of people who believe that Britain should lead, not leave Europe.

"We are pulling away from our friends and allies in a deeply uncertain world. Brexit Day won't be confirmed until parliament has agreed, so the Royal Mail is right not to waste its money.

"We might need stamps to commemorate the revival of common sense."
