ONGOLE: Undertrial Kunchala Ramesh (35) allegedly committed suicide by hanging himself from a rod in the bathroom at the sub-jail in Darsi town of Prakasam district late on Saturday night.
His family members and relatives who learned of his death, staged a demonstration at the sub-jail on Sunday, holding jail staff responsible for his death and sought action against them.
According to sources, Ramesh was caught along with five others by the Darsi police on October 10 in connection with a dacoity case. While other accused in the case got bail and released on November 19, Ramesh did not get the bail, as no one came forward to provide surety for him.
Upset over the development, dejected Ramesh hanged himself in the jail toilet using his lungi. Jail staff rushed him to the hospital, but he was declared brought dead by the doctors there.
However, the victim’s father K Edukondalu did not buy the version of the jail staff and requested the higher officials to do justice.
On the direction of Kandukur RDO G Mallikarjuna, the body was shifted to RIMS Ongole for post-mortem. According to the police, there are several cases pending against Ramesh.
