Trump's Jerusalem move protested in Toronto

Protestors on Sunday gathered for a second day across the street from the U.S. Consulate General along University Ave. in Toronto to protest the move by U.S. president Donald Trump to officially recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel.

A crowd of about 300 people of all ages and various community groups held signs and waved Palestinian and Canadian flags.

Chants of “Free Free Palestine,” “Free Free Jerusalem,” and “Down Down USA” were among many delivered by the peaceful crowd.

Signs reading “Hands off Jerusalem” and “Trump keep your nose out of Palestine” were among the many signs raised in the air by those in the crowd.

Rashad Saleh, of the Canadian Palestinian Council, told the crowd he was not here for the love of protesting and to make noise, but to express his disagreement.

He said Trump’s move gives Jerusalem to the Israelis.

“Jerusalem belong to all three religions, Muslims, and Christians and Jews,” Saleh said during an interview.

“But giving it only to the Jews, it’s going to inflame the situation,” Saleh added.

Across the road on the boulevard, a group of about half dozen peaceful counter-protestors gathered. Renanah Gemeiner held a sign saying, “Only the Jewish people have rights; Divine, Indigenous, Historical, Legal to Palestine the land of Israel.”
