Panaji: The North Goa sessions and district court on Monday heard arguments in the anticipatory bail plea filed by activist and advocate Aires Rodrigues. After hearing Rodrigues and arguments by the crime branch officials, the matter has been posted for December 15.

Rodrigues has applied for anticipatory bail in the case booked against him for outraging the modesty of a woman. The woman had filed a complaint at the Anjuna police station alleging that Rodrigues had defamed her by linking her to a politician in his social media posts. The case was later transferred to the crime branch of Goa police.

Crime branch officials told the court that investigations in the case are in the primary stage and that they are yet to complete gathering evidence, seizing proof, and recording Rodrigues' statement. Crime branch officials told the court that it is, therefore, premature for Rodrigues to have made an anticipatory bail plea at this stage.

Rodrigues, however, said there was pressure from a political leader in the case, fearing which he had applied for anticipatory bail. The case has been transferred to the crime branch without any strong reason, he said.

Rodrigues said he is seeking anticipatory bail as he anticipates the crime branch investigating officer may slap non-bailable provisions against him under the Information Technology Act.
