PANAJI: Sociological changes are painful, said archbishop of Goa and Daman Filipe Neri Ferrao, asserting that he has spoken to the Sancoale parishoners about the change in venue for the feast of St Joseph Vaz.

TOI had earlier reported that a rift has been caused among the villagers of Sancoale with regards to the proposed shifting of the venue to celebrate the feast of St Joseph Vaz on January 16. It is being proposed to shift the feast venue from the sanctuary to the old Sancoale church. Sources reveal that the shift was proposed to tackle parking problem prevalent in the area during the feast.

After the issue was raised by the Sancoale residents, Archbishop Ferrao met with the parishoners last month and tried to explain the rationale behind the church decision. On Saturday, a group of parishioners went to the archbishop's house at Altinho to press for their demand that the decision to change the venue be reverted. As the archbishop was out of station, they met some officials and put forth their views.

Speaking to TOI on Sunday, the Archbishop said that he has had a word with the villagers on the matter. "I have met those concerned. We have explained the reason to them (for the proposed shift). Any change is painful, sociologically. But, sometimes, we need to change a few things," Ferrao said.

When TOI asked him whether the shifting of the venue is final, he declined to comment on the matter.
